Read Best Screenwriting Books

There are a so many books available on screenwriting in the market. We compiled a list of best screenwriting books you can read to learn about Story, structure and Character.

10 Essential Questions to Ask Before writing your Screenplay

Whose story are you telling? It can be a boy, girl, man or woman. Who is the protagonist of your story?

And what does this main character want/need? This is both external and internal. He might want something physical externally. But he might need something else internally. Like ex. He wants to marry a girl externally. But he really needs love internally.

Who is stopping your main character from getting what he wants? This is mainly who is the villain/antagonist of your story? Conflict can be a person or it can be a situation.

Theme is the meaning of the story. Ex. Love wins in the end. If you do something wrong, you will pay back, or karma hits you back.

Through the journey of the story, what does your character learn in the story? If he is arrogant in the beginning, he can learn about humility in the end.

This is where the real essential of the screenplay comes into picture. The structure. Do you want to tell the story in flashback? Is it linear or nonlinear?  Which structure do you want to use?

Defining genre helps you to avoid cliché and sets the mood and tone of the story. Is it a comedy? A thriller? Or drama?

Where does your story take place and which time period. This affects the story a lot because by creating a set up you are transporting the audience into another place and time.

Subplots are essential because most of the time they are the mirror images of the main plot. And they also provide clues to the main plot.

How are you emotionally connected to the story or theme? Why do you want to tell this story? The more you are connected to the story, the better you can write the story.

This gives you the opportunity to attract directors or producers to your story. If the story you are writing is already done before, the audience may not be really excited. So it’s better to choose a unique concept for your story.
